About this video
Establishing the K guard from the sideguard position is crucial when facing opponents who are attempting to pressure pass. The sequence involves using an upper body attack to aid in transitioning to the K guard. Key details include:
- Maintain elbow and knee connection to prevent the opponent from creating space and sprawling out.
- Use the foot on the same side as the elbow-knee connection to either travel across the opponent's body or push against them to off-balance and create space.
- When the opponent takes an underhook, catch their wrist to control the arm, which can lead to a submission or facilitate the establishment of the K guard.
- Extend the leg across the opponent's body while controlling the wrist to either finish with a submission or force the opponent to pull away, creating space for the K guard.
- Once in the K guard, you can attack the backside or transition to other positions.
- Ensure a strong connection between your elbow and knee to maintain control and prevent the opponent from pressuring down on you.
This approach to guard retention and transition to K guard is effective against opponents who apply chest-to-chest pressure, whether you're recovering from side control or half guard. The emphasis is on control and creating opportunities to attack.
