Transitioning to the backside 50-50 position from the K-guard involves ensuring the elbow is inside the knee to maintain control. When the opponent tries to push the feet down, the transition is initiated by throwing one foot over while aiming the other foot across the opponent's hip to help cut the angle and weave through.
To prevent the opponent from pulling their leg out during the transition, grip their ankle and push it against the shoulder, creating a sticky connection. Lock up in a full figure four, maintaining tension against the opponent's leg. When passing the foot across, grip the big toe and pull it across while keeping tension in the foot to set up for heel hook attacks.
For finishing the heel hook, two main grips are used:
- Basic grip: Tuck the elbow inside and think about going belly down to prevent the opponent from backstepping and escaping the heel hook.
- Reverse figure four grip: Lock up wrist deep and use the same principle to stop the opponent from backstepping. With a good bite on the heel, bring the elbow in and either go belly down or use a side crunch to finish the submission.
It's crucial to avoid staying flat on the back during the finish, as this makes it easier for the opponent to backstep and hide their heel. Instead, force the backside position by bringing the elbow in and applying the appropriate grip to secure the submission.
