About this video

Mastering the hand fight from closed guard is crucial to successfully transitioning to the scoop grip on the opponent's leg. Control the opponent's posture with a collar tie, keeping the elbow inside the knee, and actively hook the outside leg to prevent their movement. Focus on controlling the opponent's free hand to avoid being flattened out or cross-faced.

  1. Track the opponent's bicep to prevent them from circling their hand underneath for an underhook or post inside the armpit.
  2. When the opponent circles their hand, keep your elbow inside their wrist to maintain control and prevent them from regaining the hand fight.
  3. Instead of just holding the wrist, cover the joint with your middle finger and thumb, extending your hand over their knuckles to create a stronger grip and control.
  4. Force the opponent to pull their hand away, which will create an opening for you to shoot in and establish a scoop grip on their leg.
  5. Utilize knuckle tracking by covering the knuckles with your palm and pinching at the joint to maintain a firm control over the opponent's hand.
  6. Be prepared to transition from palm tracking to knuckle tracking or controlling the inside of the wrist with a V grip, depending on the opponent's reactions.
  7. Ensure a strong grip by pinching your middle finger and thumb, compelling the opponent to pull away and expose their leg for the scoop grip.

Winning the hand fight is essential, especially when reaching for a scoop on the leg, as it can leave you in a compromised position. By covering the knuckles and pinching at the joint, you can maintain control and create opportunities to transition to the scoop grip.
