About this video

Establishing a proper K-Guard involves creating a frame outside the hip with a K hook foot and using a scoop grip. Instead of placing the foot with the pinky toe at the hip, which can lead to separation of the knee from the chest and potential guard passes, the adjustment is to bring the pinky toe slightly lower. The critical detail is maintaining the elbow inside the knee connection.

  1. Position the elbow inside the knee to create tension, closing the knee while keeping the pinky toe and laces sticky against the opponent.
  2. Reinforce the structure by pinching the elbows together and using hand grips to pull down, creating a strong and connected position.
  3. Even if the opponent pushes the feet away, the knee-to-chest connection remains intact, making it difficult for them to pass.
  4. With this structure, one-handed grips are possible, allowing for grip clearing and transitions to other positions if necessary.
  5. Emphasize the importance of the knee and elbow connection, which also facilitates a seamless transition back to a sideboard position for guard recovery.

The K-Guard is a robust guard, particularly effective in No-Gi, and the described adjustments ensure a strong foundation for various attacks, including backside 50-50 positions, back takes, and matrix hooks with modifications.
