About this video
Establishing a K guard from a north-south position involves several key movements for effective upper body control and grip management. When the opponent circles to north-south and forces you onto your back, the following steps should be taken:
- As the opponent circles, look to cross the center line with your body to prepare for K guard entry.
- Focus on gaining control of the opponent's arm by reaching inside and securing a strong grip.
- With the grip established, your foot can start to travel across the opponent's body.
- If the opponent attempts to pull away, maintain the strong control to prevent their escape.
- Overwrap the opponent's arm to get it nice and tight, which also helps in killing their grip that's controlling your feet.
- Circle your other foot inside the opponent's thumb line, moving it across towards their hip to establish the K guard.
- Keep everything tight and overwrap to kill the opponent's grip on your feet.
- Once in position, you can start working on attacks from the established K guard.
This movement is particularly useful when there is a bit more distance between you and the opponent, and they are controlling the ankles without fully committing forward.
