About this video
Defending a knee cut and establishing a K-guard position involves several steps:
- Establish a Reverse De La Riva or inside De La Riva hook as the opponent steps into a knee cut position.
- Pommel the knee inside to create a strong base, allowing the foot to travel outside and set up for a K-guard.
- Establish a lasso on the opponent's bicep by starting with a frame inside the elbow, then pommeling the foot to secure the lasso leg grip.
- This lasso grip prevents the opponent from pulling away and denies them an underhook on that side.
- With the lasso in place, the foot can travel outside the hip, which helps pull into a K-guard position while keeping the elbow inside.
- Defend against the knee cut by framing and looking to get the hand through. Use the thumb to post outside, creating space for the foot to move outside the hip.
- Recognize the cue when the space is open for the foot to make its way outside the hip, indicating the opportunity to establish a K-guard.
- Maintain control of the K-guard as the opponent attempts the knee cut, ensuring a strong defensive position.
