Hand fighting fundamentals for grappling:

  1. Hand fighting is a crucial warm-up drill to get comfortable on your feet. Start with 2 rounds of 3 minutes at 60% intensity and gradually increase to 3 rounds, eventually reaching 5-minute rounds at 100% intensity.
  2. Four key hand fighting techniques to focus on:
    1. C-block: Use a C-shaped hand to jab at the opponent's trap muscle. This helps maintain distance, block shots, and tire out the opponent.
    2. Collar tie: Control the opponent's head by pulling it down, which fatigues their neck and back. This is a dominant position often used by top grapplers.
    3. Inside tie: Dig your hand inside the opponent's head control, pop their grip off with your elbow, and hook behind their armpit. This allows you to pull them down and set up shots.
    4. Underhooks: Achieve a dominant position by controlling high on the opponent's shoulder and maintaining strong head positioning. This position is excellent for attacks and makes the opponent uncomfortable.
  3. Maintain a good wrestling stance: slightly hinged over, legs bent, and avoid standing too tall to prevent easy takedowns.
  4. Practice these techniques smoothly and relaxed, aiming to get into a rhythm. Incorporate other standing techniques like body locks as needed.
  5. The goal is to become comfortable and dominant on the feet, wearing out the opponent and setting the pace for the rest of the match.
