About this video

Transitioning to the folding pass is an effective method when opponents attempt to frame and re-guard. Utilize the Toreando or X-Pass to set up the folding pass, with a preference for gripping the outside of the knees for better control and transition.

  1. Start with two grips on the outside of the opponent's knees.
  2. Step to the outside as if attempting a Toreando pass and begin to circle around the opponent.
  3. When the opponent frames against the shoulders and turns their hips towards you, continue to bring their hips and legs down in the same direction.
  4. As their legs come down, fold them together to initiate a shin slice, using a penetration step (heel, toe, knee, over).
  5. With the legs folded, you will find yourself in a staple position, which is advantageous.
  6. Use the backside arm to cup the opponent's lower back, position your head, and choose to either backstep immediately or stabilize further by lifting their legs in a knee hug and blocking their hamstrings with your knee.
  7. When executing the shin slice, drop your shoulder onto the opponent, using it as a pivot point while securing a grip on their lower back.
  8. If the opponent reacts by moving or bucking, transition to a knee hug, circle your hand, go head to head, and complete the guard pass.
