About this video

Combining the circle pass with the folding pass involves a more intricate and deliberate method of collecting the leg compared to combining it with half guard or over-under passes. The circle pass, also known as the hand on hip toriando, starts with one hand on the opponent's hip, elbow flared out, pushing the knee down and circling around. If the opponent fails to frame on the shoulder, the guard can be passed by pushing the leg by.

  1. If the opponent frames on the shoulder, preventing the pass in that direction and attempts to capture in half guard, or maintains a knee to chest orientation, proceed to find their leg.
  2. Step close with the leg and pinch the knees together, shifting all weight onto the hands.
  3. Take small steps, flaring the feet out, and dive into the folding pass.
  4. If the opponent does not reach for the leg, step the outside leg close first to avoid a reverse De La Riva hook. If the inside leg steps close first, it may encourage the opponent to reach for half guard.
  5. Guide the opponent's knee across while walking, and once the knee breaks the line of the chest and sternum, transition to the lower back, shin slice over, and secure the folding pass.

This transition is effective when used in conjunction with other passes, allowing for a switch from passing on the outside to funneling the opponent back into a tight pressure pass.
