About this video

Applying the forearm staple during the folding pass can be an effective response when the opponent brings their top side leg tight to their chest, which can congest the space and hinder back stepping or leg placement. To execute the forearm staple:

  1. Stay heavy and calm when the opponent pulls their knee to their chest.
  2. Lift your elbow off the mat and press down to staple the opponent's leg with your forearm, anchored by your grip on the collar.
  3. If the opponent tries to prevent the pass by bringing the topside knee closer to their face, you can still staple and pass your leg to the backside.
  4. After passing to the backside, you can enter a leg drag position or side control. For added control, place your bottom side knee on the opponent's hip and build up weight.
  5. If the opponent creates space and attempts to pull your knee to their chest, lift your elbow to staple their leg again.
  6. Even if the opponent maintains a baby hook on your frontside leg, remove your foot, pass your leg to the backside, and apply weight into your forearm to prevent them from turning into you.
  7. Once you've passed, secure the bottom side underhook, place your hand on their shoulder, and establish control.

This technique allows you to maintain pressure and control, making it difficult for the opponent to counter or escape, leading to a successful pass.
