Strategies for winning the double guard pull situation in competition:

  1. Identify your preferred side for attacking, typically the side with the De La Riva hook. For example, if it's your left side, ensure the left De La Riva hook is in place.
  2. Avoid being squared up with your opponent as this allows them equal opportunity to attack. Instead, position your butt to the outside of their feet to gain an angle.
  3. Control the opponent's ankle to prevent them from squaring up with you, either by holding the ankle or sitting over their foot.
  4. Post your opposite foot on the inside of the opponent's leg to block them from establishing their own De La Riva hook and gaining an attacking position.
  5. Work towards getting to your shoulder on the side you're playing from, which will make it easier to spin underneath and potentially take the back.
  6. Maintain a strong De La Riva hook and hold onto the ankle, keeping your attacking foot slightly to the outside rather than directly in front of your opponent's foot.
  7. By posting your foot on the inside of the opponent's leg, you can keep their leg at a distance, preventing them from kicking away or establishing their De La Riva hook.
  8. These positioning strategies give you an initial advantage in the match, setting you up for successful attacks without yet engaging in any specific techniques.
