About this video
Alternative method to knock down an opponent for the berimbolo:
- Instead of kicking forward, which may lead to a knee cut position, widen the opponent's base by kicking out slightly.
- Post one foot on the mat and use it to scoop around the opponent as much as possible, shifting weight to the side rather than staying square.
- Use the grip on the collar to assist in knocking the opponent down, moving off to their left to make it easier.
- Maintain a strong De La Riva hook or shoot the foot across the hip, depending on preference. Keeping the hook strong is suggested until the opponent is knocked down.
- Once the opponent is at the right angle and off-balance, use the foot on the mat and the collar grip to bring them down.
- After the knockdown, bring the foot back to the hip to control the far hip and prepare for the berimbolo.
- If having difficulty moving the opponent, change the foot position from the hip to just above the knee to widen their base.
- Post the foot on the mat and rotate to the left, going as far to the opponent's back as possible before the knockdown.
- Pull the opponent down by bringing their butt to the mat, then bring feet up to their hip to start the inversion for the berimbolo.
