About this video
Mastering the knockdown in the berimbolo involves a push-pull strategy from the De La Riva guard. Initially, maintain control by gripping the collar, keeping the foot on the hip, and securing the De La Riva hook and ankle. The goal is to unbalance the opponent by shifting their weight, rather than relying on brute strength.
- Begin by kicking the opponent forward to prompt them to shift their weight back to avoid falling.
- As the opponent's weight comes forward, sit up slightly to engage them and create a reaction.
- When they push back, pull them in using the collar and De La Riva hook, loading their weight onto your legs.
- If possible, lift them slightly to enhance the unbalancing effect.
- Then, kick out to the side, aiming to knock the opponent down to their hip or butt.
- Keep your feet in contact with the opponent throughout the movement to maintain control.
- Once the opponent is knocked down, you are in an optimal position to begin inverting for berimbolo attacks.
It's crucial to keep the opponent moving and off-balance, making it easier to bring them to the mat and set up for subsequent attacks.
