About this video

Transitioning to the Leg Drag from the de la Riva position involves an inversion and a leg pump to create space. Flexibility determines the extent of the leg pump needed to insert the foot behind the opponent's leg. The motion should be quick and efficient.

  1. Start by hooking the outside of the opponent's knee with the left foot, resembling an X-Guard hook on their right leg, while maintaining two hooks on one leg.
  2. Remove the right hook and post the foot on the mat. Simultaneously, use the left hand on the hip to drag the opponent's legs to one side.
  3. As you post your right foot, kick out with the left leg to create distance and prevent the opponent from pummeling their leg back in, which could lead to a 50/50 guard.
  4. Extend the left leg and reach for the opponent's collar or hip, then use the bottom foot to come up to your knees, driving the left knee to the mat to secure the Leg Drag position.
  5. Alternatively, you can keep the knee of the leg dragging leg up and the opposite knee on the mat, pinching the knees together for control.
  6. Ensure control of both of the opponent's hips to prevent them from escaping. From here, you can either reach for the hip or collar and come up on top, or stay low with the opposite knee on the mat for a strong passing position.

Both methods lead to a solid Leg Drag position, with the choice of driving the knee to the mat or keeping it up depending on personal preference and pressure application.
