About this video

Transitioning from single leg X-Guard to an outside heel hook involves several key steps to ensure control and effectiveness:

  1. Begin in the single leg X-Guard and prepare to transition into the reap. It's crucial to destabilize the opponent before reaping the leg over to prevent them from countering or blocking the movement.
  2. Focus on fitting your leg behind the opponent's knee to create a hooking shape that allows you to stay attached and control their movement.
  3. Adjust your knee to the floor and aim to occupy the space behind the opponent's knee. Depending on their reaction, either expand or contract your leg to maintain control.
  4. When ready to attack the heel, aim for the ball just below the pinky toe to maximize leverage. Avoid too much space between your arm and the opponent's foot to prevent slippage and maintain control.
  5. Secure the heel by placing it against your wrist bone or forearm, ensuring there is no space between your arm and the opponent's foot. The exact placement of the heel on your arm may vary, but the goal is to eliminate any slack.
  6. Before applying the finishing movement, draw the opponent's foot in to remove any slack. This ensures that even the smallest movement will effectively spin the foot and apply pressure to the heel.
  7. If the opponent attempts to roll through the heel hook, use the mat to find your base and prevent them from initiating a second roll. Chop your feet back towards your buttocks to stabilize your position.
  8. Control the opponent's toes and ensure there's no space between your arm and their heel. The finish involves spinning the foot in a tight circle, which can be achieved by pointing your elbow or looking over your shoulder, depending on the situation.

Throughout the technique, it's important to adapt to the opponent's reactions and maintain a strong base to effectively secure and finish the outside heel hook.
