About this video

The short hook is a variation of the X-Guard that enhances the ability to lift and off-balance an opponent. It involves transitioning from the standard X-Guard to doubling up on the lifting capability by using both legs effectively.

  1. Start in the standard X-Guard position, with the left foot checking the opponent's forward movement and the right foot underneath them for lifting.
  2. Use the right hand to lift the opponent's knee, while removing the left foot from the hip to avoid blocking yourself.
  3. Shoot the opponent's knee up and set the short hook, which allows for lifting the lead leg and blocking the far hip and ribs.
  4. The short hook provides a strong control, making it difficult for the opponent to check and easy for you to draw them in and lift.
  5. Unlike the normal X-Guard, the short hook offers the benefit of both lifting and blocking the opponent effectively.
  6. Additionally, the short hook position allows for a quick transition to a foot lock, specifically an outside heel hook, which can be executed without the need for extensive tracking or following.
  7. The finish from the short hook is usually immediate, without the need for belly-down transitions.
  8. Choosing between the standard X-Guard and the short hook depends on the need to block, lift, or quickly finish with a submission.

Understanding the function of each component in the technique provides insight into which tools to use for effective control and submission.
