About this video
Executing the Ashi Garami from the one-leg X position:
- Transition to the short hook by lifting the opponent's leg using an ankle lock grip and the other hand on the inside of their knee. Ensure your foot is not blocking the path for their leg to fall into place.
- Find the sweet spot on the opponent's heel for the Ashi Garami. If the heel is too far in or out, it will be difficult to apply the submission effectively.
- Bring your knee to your chest and drape it across the center to prevent the opponent from turning their knee down, which would alleviate pressure.
- Use your hand to check the opponent's shin if necessary to maintain control and prevent them from turning downward.
- Slide the opponent's heel out slightly and lock up a rear naked choke grip for the finish.
- Rotate over your left shoulder, ensuring your hips do not drop, which would allow the opponent to crowd you. Maintain a wall-like resistance against their pressure.
- Draw your left knee inward to create additional pressure as you pull outward and rotate over your shoulder for a clean finish.
- Use the short hook to create a barrier, preventing the opponent from booting their foot out or pushing inward.
- Keep your foot in line with their ribs and your hips slightly off the mat to block their foot from jamming through.
- If the opponent tries to rotate downward to escape, use your hand to check them and switch between applying the Ashi Garami and checking as needed.
