About this video
Transitioning from the waiter sweep to the far side X sweep involves a series of movements to adapt to the opponent's pressure. When the opponent is pressing past rather than directly into you, the following steps should be taken:
- Start by working towards the short X-Guard hook, building into the opponent.
- If the opponent is pressing past, use your right shin to redirect them off to the side.
- Simultaneously, snake your left foot into the gap at their knee.
- Attempt to secure a hand on their tricep if possible.
- Extend your left leg to move the opponent out slightly, creating space and alignment.
- Blade your body to ensure your hand on the mat, chest, and opponent are in a straight line for maximum power.
- Execute a technical stand-up, finishing the sweep on the opposite side, similar to the Marcelo Garcia X-Guard build.
- Bring your hips in and work towards the next position, maintaining control.
- As you come up, if the opponent tries to push you back down or disengage, use their momentum to transition to the opposite side.
- When your hand comes off the mat, track the opponent with your knee to maintain proximity.
- As you rise to your knee, pull the opponent back and work to get behind them.
- Resist the urge to immediately go for the seatbelt grip or jump to the back.
- Instead, try to find double unders and aim to put your partner to a knee before deciding on your next offensive move.
This sequence is particularly effective against opponents who frequently engage and disengage, using their energy against them to transition between sweeps.
