About this video

During a sparring session, an effective counter to an early defense against the Ashi Garami is demonstrated. When the opponent preemptively turns their knee down to avoid the foot lock, it creates an opportunity to transition to the X-Guard. The opponent's early knee turn, intended as a defense, leaves space to swim the left arm through and attack with a normal X-Guard sweep.

  1. Start with a foot on the hip, and when the opponent pushes it off, switch to a short hook to lift them.
  2. If the opponent turns their knee down early, swim the left arm through to their knee and initiate the X-Guard sweep.
  3. As the opponent presses back, attempt to send them across to the far left for an offside sweep. If they catch their balance, it opens them up to the waiter sweep.
  4. For the waiter sweep, let the short hook go through the gap created by the opponent's knee turn, tilting them towards the back right corner.
  5. If the opponent steps over the head to defend, use the crotch lock and a technical stand-up to complete the sweep.
  6. When the opponent tries to transition to a body lock, stay connected to prevent their movement and transition to a heel hook when they backstep.
  7. During the heel hook, ensure the shoulder, hip, and shin are aligned to resist forward pressure from the opponent.
  8. When restarting, if the opponent pushes the foot off the hip, instead of going for a short hook, start to reap and tilt back to apply pressure and draw their knees inward.
  9. As the opponent tries to build their base, create lateral knee bar pressure to force their knee to turn downward, allowing for an attack on the outside foot lock and transition to a heel hook.

This sequence emphasizes the importance of fluid transitions between techniques and capitalizing on the opponent's defensive movements to create openings for sweeps and submissions.
