About this video
Transitioning from X-guard to back attack when the opponent turns into you:
- Begin by stabilizing your partner's knee and swimming your hand underneath to secure their leg between your elbow and shoulder.
- Check their tricep, circle under, and set your short hook with your knee behind theirs to create space.
- As you start to build up, ensure you create an angle with your body to make it difficult for your opponent to press into you.
- If your opponent turns into you, creating a tree top scenario, close the distance and be mindful of avoiding a triangle choke.
- Stay anchored with your right arm and take a small step in to prepare for a foot sweep.
- Hook behind your opponent's foot and tilt them past it, landing while still being cautious of the triangle choke.
- Release your hand and usually, your opponent will set a De La Riva guard.
- Work towards the Marcelo style X-guard, find your short hook, and keep your opponent's weight off of you.
- Angle yourself and build up, controlling the inside track as your opponent gets up.
- If your opponent circles in, use their tricep to drag them and incorporate foot sweeps to create instability.
- Remember that you have two feet on the ground while they are on one, and use this advantage to off-balance and take them down.
- Be mindful of potential triangle chokes as you move your opponent, and keep your elbow close to prevent them from pulling you into attacks.
- If they attempt a triangle, cut them loose and transition to De La Riva guard.
