About this video
Executing the short hook to waiter sweep from Reverse De La Riva:
- Start in Reverse De La Riva guard, using it to transition into the X-Guard by pulling through and checking the opponent's leg.
- Control the bend of the opponent's knee and swim your hand under to get your left arm crooked at the elbow underneath their calf.
- Insert the short hook and alternate between building into the X-Guard sweep by extending the opponent away and blading your body to initiate the waiter sweep.
- If the opponent presses back, use your right leg to draw them over you, aiming to get as far over or as close underneath them as possible.
- Let your right foot pass through to find the opponent in the waiter sweep position.
- Ensure the opponent settles their weight down to maintain the correct dynamics for the sweep.
- Rock the opponent back slightly and tilt them into the back right corner, being careful not to roll over your left ankle.
- Once the opponent is down, choose an appropriate method to get up, such as a technical stand-up or transitioning into a half guard or over-under pass.
- Be creative with your get-up, considering leg drags, berimbolos, or double unders, but prioritize a solid base and simple get-up if possible.
- Control the opponent's balance by finding their posts and putting them to a hip, then work to pass their guard.
