About this video

Transitioning from a failed Ashi Garami to a back attack involves a series of strategic movements:

  1. Start by entering the deep half guard and then transitioning to the X-Guard.
  2. Attempt to attack with an Ashi Garami, but if the opponent turns their knee inward to defend, prepare to switch strategies.
  3. Remove the left foot from the opponent's hip and thread it through to initiate a reap.
  4. Maintain alignment of the foot, knee, hip, and shoulder, using leg press motion to prevent the opponent from crowding you.
  5. Rotate inward and post the foot on the ground to connect to a technical stand-up.
  6. From the technical stand-up, you have the option to attack with an outside heel hook or transition to a calf slicer.
  7. If choosing to stand up, post the foot on the ground, rise to a knee, and then work to get behind the opponent.
  8. Set a short hook as you raise the opponent's leg, and if they turn inward again, proceed with the reap.
  9. Use the technical stand-up to either finish with a calf slicer or transition to another form of offense, such as taking the back.

It's important to adapt to the opponent's reactions and choose the most effective transition, whether it's a reap, calf slicer, or outside heel hook.
