About this video
Transitioning from a failed Ashi Garami to a back attack involves a series of strategic movements:
- Start by entering the deep half guard and then transitioning to the X-Guard.
- Attempt to attack with an Ashi Garami, but if the opponent turns their knee inward to defend, prepare to switch strategies.
- Remove the left foot from the opponent's hip and thread it through to initiate a reap.
- Maintain alignment of the foot, knee, hip, and shoulder, using leg press motion to prevent the opponent from crowding you.
- Rotate inward and post the foot on the ground to connect to a technical stand-up.
- From the technical stand-up, you have the option to attack with an outside heel hook or transition to a calf slicer.
- If choosing to stand up, post the foot on the ground, rise to a knee, and then work to get behind the opponent.
- Set a short hook as you raise the opponent's leg, and if they turn inward again, proceed with the reap.
- Use the technical stand-up to either finish with a calf slicer or transition to another form of offense, such as taking the back.
It's important to adapt to the opponent's reactions and choose the most effective transition, whether it's a reap, calf slicer, or outside heel hook.
