About this video

Transitioning from a short hook to a leg drag involves several steps to control the opponent's movement and secure a dominant position. When the opponent starts to shift to the side, possibly aiming for a reverse half guard, the following sequence can be applied:

  1. Begin by raising the opponent's leg and transitioning behind them to gain control of their hips, establishing a double X-Guard position.
  2. Play with the opponent's base and look for an opportunity to hook underneath their near side arm, pivoting through the gap created.
  3. As you land, walk into the leg drag as far as possible, letting your foot come through to find the opponent's second leg.
  4. If the opponent attempts to turn and build their base, chop them back over to regain your base.
  5. Ensure your partner sets their frames to provide resistance, allowing you to practice navigating through their defenses.
  6. When transitioning from shin to thigh to hip, maintain balance and control.
  7. If the opponent starts to drift around the corner, hook their leg and whip them into a corner where they have no post to stabilize themselves.
  8. If the opponent attempts to stand up, you can reset them back down or transition into their guard.
  9. Work to get chest to chest and find your way through the gaps to secure the leg drag position.
  10. Communicate with your training partner to receive feedback and adjust your technique accordingly.
  11. When you have won the inside track, be mindful of potential leg entanglements and foot locks. Hide your foot when possible to avoid these attacks.

Practicing this sequence with a resisting partner will help refine the technique and improve the ability to control and dominate from the short hook to the leg drag transition.
