About this video
Transitioning from deep half guard to one leg X-guard involves several steps to ensure proper alignment and control. Here's a breakdown of the technique:
- Starting from De La Riva guard, when the opponent steps over your leg, create movement to make them place their hands on the mat.
- If unable to circle your left leg through and the opponent doesn't block the space underneath, transition to deep half guard.
- Shoot your right hand under the opponent's leg while rotating your hips to the far side, ensuring your body is not misaligned.
- Focus on getting onto your side rather than lying flat, using the backside hook to shift the opponent's weight to their trailing leg.
- Practice navigating from this position with a relaxed partner to become comfortable moving underneath them.
- From Reverse De La Riva, as the opponent presses back in, rotate your hips to the side and hook the near side leg, a technique credited to Ryan Hall.
- Keep your right foot active underneath the opponent's leg and use your body to navigate towards one leg X-guard.
- Hand off the opponent's leg with your left leg while maintaining a sticky hook to prevent them from escaping.
- Snake your right knee between you and the opponent, connecting your elbow and knee to block any gap.
- Shelve the opponent's leg with your left hand to control their weight distribution, then transition your left foot through to get to the side and establish one leg X-guard.
Throughout the transition, it's important to maintain control and use your body effectively to navigate and achieve the desired position.
