About this video

Transitioning to the 50/50 position using the short hook:

  1. Start in the one leg X guard and carve under the opponent's leg to raise it, setting the short hook.
  2. Double up on the opponent's leg by using your left foot, right hand, and left hand to control it.
  3. Optionally, use your right leg to reinforce your left leg and keep the opponent's weight on their back leg.
  4. Swim your right foot through the gap between you and the opponent, similar to the Ashi Garami setup.
  5. Allow your left foot to come out and drop the opponent's foot into the pocket of your hip to establish the 50/50 position.
  6. Ensure the person on top maintains good position, with their foot, knee, and hip aligned to prevent easy off-balancing.
  7. When passing your foot across to lock the 50/50, keep it short to avoid giving the opponent a chance for counter foot locks.
  8. Once in the 50/50, align your feet, knees, hips, shoulders, and hands towards your partner for a strong position.

Practicing this transition requires the top person to focus on balance and alignment to realistically simulate the position's dynamics.
