About this video
Entering the seated guard involves a classic shin-on-shin setup. Begin in a seated position, mindful of your posture and leg placement to prevent exposing your defense. Sit cross-legged or with one leg up for more mobility. Avoid rounding your back to maintain a strong base against your opponent's pressure.
- Connect your shin to your opponent's when they have one knee up and one knee down. Be ready to address their hand placement as it's crucial for control.
- Use your elbow to center on your opponent and employ your entire body to move them, not just your arms. Anchor with your left hand and shift your body to affect their balance.
- Wait for the moment your opponent's balance is compromised, then carve into the space underneath them.
- If your opponent tries to bring their knee down, use your hand to shelf their knee temporarily, making it difficult for them to find the mat.
- Drag their leg out of the way as you fall towards the center, transitioning your right leg up and left foot to their hip, entering the one leg X-guard.
- Ensure your foot doesn't settle on the mat to prevent them from closing the distance and crowding your base.
For the standing variation, the shin-on-shin entry is similar:
- Close the distance with your opponent, clearing any blocks, and connect your shin to theirs.
- Move yourself to manipulate your opponent's balance. If they don't respond, it sets up an easy sweep.
- When they do respond, use their reaction to set up your entry into the guard.
- Slide your arms under, check their balance, carve underneath, and secure your foot on their hip.
- Place your right leg in the center, check their tricep, keep their foot off the mat, and stabilize your position in the one leg X-guard.
