About this video
Passing the De La Riva guard to set up a choke involves a series of grips and body movements to secure control and finish the technique.
- Start by controlling the opponent's pants on one side and their collar with the right hand.
- Step over their leg and move your foot to the outside, making sure to close your shoulder to block the opponent and prevent them from crossing their foot in front of your legs.
- As the opponent tries to control your shoulder, pass your hand under their arm to control their far shoulder.
- Bring their leg towards you, ensuring your leg is on top of your arm for better leverage.
- Switch your right hand grip to the other side, reaching deep to pull their arm to the ground.
- Use your left leg to block their shoulder from the top, connecting your legs together.
- While the opponent maintains a lapel guard, use your left arm and shoulder to pull their chest down as you secure your feet together.
- Shift your weight to the right, bringing your shoulder across to force the opponent to look away.
- Control the gi over your shoulder and press down with your leg on their arm to apply the choke.
Throughout the technique, it's important to maintain tight control and ensure your legs are connected to prevent the opponent from escaping or countering.
