About this video

Passing the De La Riva guard involves a series of steps to effectively control and pass the opponent's guard. Begin by establishing a grip on the opponent's pants below the knee with one hand and on their collar with the other hand. Step back and then forward with the opposite leg to trap the opponent's foot between your legs, squeezing your knees together and lowering your hips.

  1. With the grips in place, step back and forward to trap the opponent's foot between your legs, squeezing your knees and lowering your hips.
  2. Thread your free hand between the opponent's legs, which will weaken their grip on your sleeve.
  3. Secure a grip on the opponent's pants on the thigh with the hand that was threaded through.
  4. Open your knee outward and point your toes in the same direction to remove the De La Riva hook.
  5. Fall to the side you have the collar grip, using your shoulder and chest to press the opponent's knee down.
  6. Place your forearm and elbow on the mat to support your weight as you touch your knee to the mat.
  7. As the opponent pushes you away, pass your knee over their legs and walk to the side, gluing your hips to theirs.
  8. Control the opponent's head, place your knees on the mat, and transition to side control, securing the position by passing your other arm under their armpit.

This sequence allows you to effectively smash the De La Riva guard and secure side control, neutralizing the opponent's guard and setting up for further attacks.
