About this video
Passing the De La Riva guard involves a series of grips and movements to effectively remove the opponent's hook and secure a pass to side control.
- Begin by controlling the inside of the opponent's pants with one hand and securing the collar with the other hand.
- Use your elbow to remove the De La Riva hook while simultaneously stepping back slightly with the leg that was hooked.
- Cross your leg diagonally, stepping forward, and slide your knee under the opponent's opposite leg.
- With the collar grip, pull yourself close to the opponent, aiming to touch your knee to the mat.
- Control the opponent's head by meeting your hands together, with the left hand coming under to connect over the opponent's shoulder.
- Keep your left knee raised to prevent the opponent from closing half guard.
- Lean forward slightly, then insert your left knee across the opponent's body to pass the guard.
- Ensure your right foot stays behind the opponent's knee to keep their guard open and avoid being trapped in half guard.
- Once you have passed the guard, establish side control by connecting your hands, pressing forward, and securing your position.
