About this video
Counter the De La Riva (DLR) guard when attempting to pass:
- Start in the opponent's closed guard. As you stand up to break the guard, the opponent may open their guard to transition to De La Riva guard.
- As the opponent opens their guard and attempts to insert their leg for the DLR hook, prepare to counter.
- Control the opponent's collar with your right hand and their sleeve with your left hand.
- As the opponent grabs your sleeve and ankle to establish DLR control, step on the ground with both feet.
- Before the opponent can fully establish the DLR hook, control their pants near the DLR hook with your left hand while maintaining collar grip with your right hand.
- Kick your right leg down to break the DLR hook and sit on top of the opponent's thigh to prevent them from re-establishing the hook.
- Bring your right leg back and position yourself to the side of the opponent, establishing side control.
- Repeat the sequence smoothly and in real time to effectively counter the DLR hook and pass the guard.
