About this video

Executing a collar drag involves using the gi to create a strong connection with the opponent's weight. Begin by making a cross grip on the collar and shifting to the opposite hip. Similar to an arm drag, post the hand on the mat, lift the hip, remove the leg, and switch hips to connect with the opponent's weight.

  1. Make a cross grip on the opponent's collar, not too deep, which can also be used to punch and redirect the opponent, protecting your space.
  2. Shift your weight to the opposite hip, lift your hip, and prepare to switch sides for the drag.
  3. Execute the drag by lifting your hip, pulling on the collar, and covering the opponent's body with yours.
  4. As the opponent tries to rise, lean into the collar grip and bring your chest over their back to secure a seatbelt grip.
  5. Combine the collar drag with a leg kick, either by kicking the inside of the knee to spread their base or targeting a vertical femur to drop their weight onto their hip.
  6. Maintain the collar grip throughout the movement, using it to punch down and assist in getting up before the opponent, then secure the seatbelt and find the back.

The collar drag not only spikes the opponent into the mat but also delays their ability to escape by controlling their shoulders with the collar grip.
