About this video

Initiating control in a grappling exchange begins with hand fighting, and one of the most effective positions to aim for is the 2-on-1 grip. When an opponent opts for a collar tie, it presents an opportunity to establish this control. In scenarios where the opponent is more passive and does not engage with a collar tie, provoke them into making a wrist control grip on you.

  1. Harass the opponent to encourage them to grip your wrist or hand.
  2. Project your elbow forward to break their passive grip.
  3. As you scoot forward to get underneath the opponent, they will likely pull their arm back.
  4. Use their momentum, similar to an arm drag, to win double underhooks.
  5. With palms over their shoulder blades, either keep them high or connect your hands.
  6. Force the opponent forward to make them post their hands on the mat.
  7. Duck your head out and use your feet to stick to the opponent as you extend and control their arm, shooting yourself around to their back.
  8. Hold the far side of their body and maintain the timing to duck out before their arm is weighted on the floor.
  9. If necessary, use your hand to clear their arm, but if your hands are connected, use your body movement.
  10. Stay sticky with your hook, open your knees, and extend with your head and leg to not only climb out around your opponent but also to make them spin and present their back to you.
  11. Chase the back, fight for alignment, secure your hooks, and establish back control.

This technique emphasizes the importance of timing and the use of body movement to gain advantageous positions such as the double underhooks and ultimately taking the back.
