About this video
Enhancing the basic arm drag with a kick to disrupt the opponent's base is a strategic move in Jiu-Jitsu. The goal is to simultaneously threaten with sweeps, submissions, and unbalancing tactics, making it easier to execute attacks. When an opponent's base is compromised, their defensive posture tightens, reducing their footprint and making them more susceptible to sweeps. Conversely, when their base is threatened, their limbs extend, making them more vulnerable to submissions.
Timing is crucial when using kicks to unbalance an opponent. Look for moments when the opponent's femur is nearly vertical, indicating their weight is loaded over their knee. A well-timed kick at this point can cause them to fall. Alternatively, if the opponent's knee is wide open, kicking it can stretch their hip and temporarily immobilize them due to the limits of their flexibility.
When executing the arm drag with a kick, it's not necessary to be precise about whether the opponent's femur is vertical or their knee is open. Either scenario is beneficial. The key is to observe and anticipate the opponent's movements to identify the right moment for a kick.
During the arm drag, as the opponent's weight shifts, kick out the leg that's becoming loaded. It's important to quickly cover their back before they can defend or reposition. Imagine having suction cups on your body to pull and cover the opponent effectively. Upper body control is crucial for back control, while hooks provide hip control. These elements work together synergistically.
After the arm drag and kick, immediately cover the opponent's back with your chest and secure a high and tight seatbelt grip. Keep your head close to prevent them from rolling away. With your toes on the floor, you can tip, climb, or follow your opponent as needed. The objective is to connect with the opponent's back before they can escape.
