About this video
Executing the Waiter Sweep when facing a back step pass from De La Riva Guard:
- Maintain a tight De La Riva Guard and anticipate the opponent's back step pass attempt.
- Before the opponent completes the pass, underhook their leg and switch your grip to their pants, using your elbow to assist if necessary.
- Keep your hips off the mat to prevent the opponent from gaining leverage and to off-balance them.
- If you're adept at switching grips, you can immediately grab the pants and underhook. Otherwise, secure the pants with your elbow first, then transition to the grip when comfortable.
- Weave your leg inside and execute the sweep.
- If flexibility is an issue, keep one leg in and use your foot behind the opponent's knee to assist in elevating them.
- Once elevated, you can kick up to complete the sweep or transition to the back.
- For additional security, you can hug the opponent's thigh, grab their belt, or gi material.
- Remember to create space by elevating the opponent before attempting to weave your leg in or kick up.
