About this video

Initiate the Lapel De la Riva by securing the opponent's lapel and passing it to the hand under the leg. This grip helps break the opponent's posture and secures the De la Riva hook.

  1. Start by working the lapel to ensure it is not too loose, which helps in breaking the opponent's posture and maintaining control.
  2. When ready to sweep, extend the leg to make the opponent fall, then spin under their legs.
  3. Transition from holding the lapel to grabbing the opponent's pants, pulling them towards you to maintain control.
  4. Depending on the situation, either hug the opponent or control the pants for better leverage.
  5. When the opponent's leg is near, let go of the lapel and reach for the other leg, stepping behind their knee to facilitate a leg drag.

For a different De la Riva setup:

  1. Free the lapel while maintaining a tight De la Riva hook and pass the lapel over your leg to the other hand.
  2. Ensure to keep your side away from the opponent to prevent giving them an opportunity to pass or attack.
  3. Use the lapel to keep the opponent's posture down and secure your De la Riva position.
  4. Push to off-balance the opponent and execute a berimbolo as they attempt to recover, making them fall.
  5. From the berimbolo, you can either come on top or spin under and secure your knee position, ensuring there's no opportunity for the opponent to attack your foot or take your back.
  6. Only release the lapel to come up when you have secured the opposite leg and are ready to attack with the berimbolo.
  7. Keep the lapel tight until you can reach the opponent's pants, then let go of the lapel, grab the pants, and complete the leg drag.
