About this video

Executing a technical stand-up when facing a knee on belly situation in competition:

  1. When setting up your position and your opponent uses their elbow to push your leg and attempts a knee cut, be prepared to counter.
  2. As your opponent steps over, use your shin against their thigh to shift to their other leg, placing your shin right behind their knee.
  3. This movement resembles setting up an X-Guard, but it's not exactly an X-Guard. It's a similar setup used to sweep.
  4. From the De La Riva guard, as you feel the pressure, throw yourself under your opponent and position your shin behind their knee.
  5. Place your hand or forearm on their shin and start to kick away, using the foot that's behind their knee for leverage.
  6. Use your other leg to assist in the kick, creating more force to off-balance your opponent.
  7. Prop up on your forearm to facilitate the sweep. If your opponent falls, recover your leg first and establish top position.
  8. If your opponent remains standing, keep the leg that was behind their knee in place to maintain control and assist in completing the technical stand-up.
  9. Throughout the technique, maintain your grip and use your legs to kick your opponent away, aiding in the sweep and allowing you to transition to a standing position.
