About this video

Setting up a triangle from the De La Riva guard:

  1. Start with a tight De La Riva hook and your knee pointing towards your head to off-balance your opponent on their heel.
  2. Push with your leg and use the momentum to sit up. As you do this, the leg with the De La Riva hook will drop.
  3. Reach behind your opponent's knee with your outside hand, ensuring there is no gap to prevent them from stepping out and passing your guard.
  4. Keep your inside hand tight and pass the leg that was the De La Riva hook to your other hand.
  5. Grab your opponent's lapel with your outside hand, along their shoulder to their face, to break their balance more effectively.
  6. If your opponent places their hand on the mat to avoid the sweep, put your back on the mat and move towards their arm, falling onto your side.
  7. Place your former De La Riva hook on their hip and use it to maintain distance. If they try to knee cut, use your heel to push them away.
  8. Shift your hips out while maintaining the lapel grip throughout the movement.
  9. Kick your leg behind your opponent's leg to set up the triangle.
  10. Let go of the lapel grip and reach for your shin to close the triangle. Control your opponent's wrist with your free hand to prevent them from defending.
  11. Squeeze to finish the triangle, ensuring your hands are always above your leg, controlling the sleeve and lapel, and falling towards the arm to set up the submission.
