About this video
Passing the De La Riva guard involves a series of steps to break the opponent's grip and control:
- Prevent the opponent from reaching for the lapel to avoid posture break.
- Engage the hips to apply pressure and prevent the opponent from establishing a strong grip or executing a sweep.
- Position the feet on the side rather than the tiptoes and cup the opponent's shin instead of pushing directly on the knee.
- Turn the foot outwards while keeping the hips engaged to break the De La Riva hook.
- As the opponent pushes back to regain the De La Riva hook, cup under their leg.
- Use the knee to apply pressure on the back of the opponent's knee, switching the grip from the shin to the back of their pants.
- Lift the opponent using the grip on the pants and use the momentum to reach for their lapel.
- Continue to pass the guard, maintaining control and pressure throughout the movement.
It's important to maintain a squat position and keep the foot on the outside to effectively counter the opponent's attempts to push back with their legs.
