About this video
Executing a triangle from the Open De la Riva position involves several key steps:
- Start in the regular De La Riva guard with a grip on the sleeve and heel. Aim to grab the opponent's lapel to set up the triangle.
- Force the opponent to lean forward by stepping on the mat and using the De La Riva hook to elevate them slightly, making them post on the mat or grab your legs.
- If you can't break their grip on your leg, use an outside hook instead. If the opponent tries to pinch your leg, kick diagonally forward to counter.
- Use the back of your hand near the opponent's face to adjust your grip on the lapel and to guide their movement.
- As the opponent pushes against you, remove your De La Riva hook from behind their leg and place it on their hip.
- Shift your hips upward and lock in the triangle choke as the opponent's posture is compromised.
- Ensure that you pull the opponent's leg on top of you when transitioning from the De La Riva hook to the hip before attempting the triangle.
