About this video

Counter the De La Riva sweep with a back step pass:

  1. Begin by breaking the De La Riva hook and the opponent's grip.
  2. Step over the opponent's leg and reach for their lapel.
  3. As the opponent attempts the sweep, place your knee on their chest for control.
  4. Simultaneously, put your hand on the mat to maintain balance.
  5. Transition the hand from the lapel to the opponent's pants.
  6. Execute a back step while maintaining control of the pants.
  7. Finish the pass by establishing knee on belly position.

This technique is simple and efficient, often used by Leandro Lo in competition.
