About this video

Executing a Balloon Sweep to Berimbolo from the De la Riva X-Guard involves a series of grip switches and precise leg work to off-balance and sweep the opponent while preventing them from taking your back.

  1. Start by switching grips to the other side of the opponent while keeping your elbow close to their body. Place your foot on the mat.
  2. Use a cross-back hook to make a back step, inserting the other hook in to bring the opponent over.
  3. As you sweep the opponent, keep your leg crossed over theirs to prevent them from taking your back.
  4. Control the opponent's leg with your grip and use the crossing hook to block their counter movement.
  5. Extend your outside leg to create space and remove your hook from behind the opponent's knee.
  6. As the opponent turns, switch your grip to their pants and place your other hand on their back to secure the back take.
  7. If the opponent is strong or adept at berimbolos, adjust your stepping to counter their strength and skill.
  8. Use their momentum to switch your grip to their pants and slide your leg to facilitate the transition.
  9. Finally, throw yourself up to grab behind the opponent's back, twist their leg into a butterfly hook, bring them over, and secure the position.
