About this video
Executing a Balloon Sweep to Berimbolo from the De la Riva X-Guard involves a series of grip switches and precise leg work to off-balance and sweep the opponent while preventing them from taking your back.
- Start by switching grips to the other side of the opponent while keeping your elbow close to their body. Place your foot on the mat.
- Use a cross-back hook to make a back step, inserting the other hook in to bring the opponent over.
- As you sweep the opponent, keep your leg crossed over theirs to prevent them from taking your back.
- Control the opponent's leg with your grip and use the crossing hook to block their counter movement.
- Extend your outside leg to create space and remove your hook from behind the opponent's knee.
- As the opponent turns, switch your grip to their pants and place your other hand on their back to secure the back take.
- If the opponent is strong or adept at berimbolos, adjust your stepping to counter their strength and skill.
- Use their momentum to switch your grip to their pants and slide your leg to facilitate the transition.
- Finally, throw yourself up to grab behind the opponent's back, twist their leg into a butterfly hook, bring them over, and secure the position.
