About this video

When facing the Reverse De La Riva, avoid placing your knee on the mat as it increases the risk of being swept. Instead of controlling the pants, opt for controlling the shin to prevent the opponent from weaving in or breaking your grip. Simultaneously, control the opposite side lapel to hinder their ability to spin under.

  1. Control the opponent's shin with one hand and the opposite side lapel with the other hand.
  2. Extend your leg to create space and sit up.
  3. Step in and place your knee on the mat, then hug the opponent's head to secure the position.
  4. As you backstep, quickly switch your grips to maintain control and prevent the opponent from spinning under you.
  5. Stretch the opponent's hips with your leg extension and keep the lapel grip tight to limit their upper body movement.
  6. With control established, bring your knee down, switch to hug the head, and complete the pass by backstepping and freeing your trapped leg.

This approach stretches the opponent's hips and restricts their upper body, making it difficult for them to move and allowing for a tight and controlled guard pass.
