About this video
Transitioning from the waiter sweep to the X-Guard involves baiting the opponent into thinking a sweep is coming. As the opponent steps back to regain balance, this is the moment to initiate a submission. Pushing the opponent's arm away is a simple setup, but the focus should be on the leg positioning for the submission.
- Feign an attempt to come up for a sweep, prompting the opponent to step back onto the mat.
- As the opponent steps back, place one foot on their hip to keep them at bay.
- Bring the other leg over and control the opponent's heel, locking in and preparing to hit the submission.
- Expect the opponent to turn in reaction. Follow their movement and land in a position to apply a belly-down kneebar.
- Keep the opponent's heel close to your ear and ensure the kneebar is applied correctly by not letting the heel drop.
- If the opponent continues to rotate, you have the option to attack the LCL or transition to a toe hold.
- If the toe hold is not effective and control is being lost, switch back to the kneebar, pinching your knees for the submission.
The key to success in this sequence is making the opponent believe a sweep is imminent, using foot placement to control their movement, and transitioning smoothly between submission attempts as they react and defend.
