About this video
Executing a toe hold from the 50-50 guard can be deceptive and effective. Begin by bringing the opponent's leg across to simulate a reaping motion, which is legal since the intention is not a straight ankle lock. Hide your heel to protect it from counter-attacks.
- Scoop your arm under the opponent's leg while simultaneously hiding your heel.
- Shift the opponent's focus to their other leg by initiating a toe hold on that side.
- If the opponent stiffens their leg to defend the toe hold, weave your leg under theirs to set up the next move.
- Pinch your knees together to apply pressure and secure the position.
- Allow the opponent to roll while maintaining a tight toe hold, which may result in a tap.
- If the toe hold doesn't finish the fight, transition to a kneebar by bringing your foot into position and securing the opponent's leg.
- Keep your other foot safe by hiding it or stepping over to prevent the opponent from attacking it.
- Focus on maintaining control rather than spinning too much, which allows you to set up for the heel hook.
- Pull the opponent's heel up, go under with your arm, bring your armpit on top of their foot, pinch your knees, and execute the submission.
This sequence of attacks creates a dilemma for the opponent, as defending one submission opens them up to another, demonstrating the interconnected nature of leg attacks in the 50-50 guard.
