About this video

Preventing the escape when attacking the Tama Lock from the 50/50 position involves a series of steps to control your opponent's movement and secure the submission.

  1. Begin by opening your opponent's leg to create space and push it out.
  2. Bring your knee into the created space and hook your opponent's ankle onto their belt, establishing control.
  3. Secure a grip on your opponent's lapel to prevent them from running away, attaching yourself to them.
  4. Drag your opponent's leg across your body and use your other hand to grab their belt, further immobilizing them.
  5. Manipulate the trapped leg by bringing it across and using your knee to press against their belly.
  6. Assist your upper body movement by pulling with your hand on the lapel and placing your elbow on the mat.
  7. Wrap your arm around your opponent's body if possible, to increase control and set up for taking the back or passing the guard.
  8. When your opponent attempts to push on your belly to escape the leg drag, sit up and release the air in your belly to create a concave space for bending their foot into the lock.
  9. Lock the foot by curling into your opponent, keeping their leg bent to prevent them from straightening it and escaping.
  10. If the opponent has flexible feet and tries to push away, use your other leg to throw over and squeeze, maintaining the bend in their leg.
  11. Be cautious when practicing the roll into the belly-down heel hook setup, as it can cause injury. Practice gently and release the foot to allow for safe repetition.

Throughout the technique, it's important to maintain control of the opponent's hip to prevent inversion and to keep their leg bent for an effective submission.
