About this video

When unable to attack the nearside leg or open the leg entanglement in the 50/50 position, focus on protecting your exposed foot to prevent heel hooks, toe holds, or ankle locks. To safeguard your ankle:

  1. Bring your knee inside the hole created by your opponent's legs and hook their heel with your foot. This position secures your ankle and eliminates angles for leg attacks.
  2. If your opponent's leg remains locked and you can't open it, look for alternative options. The far side leg is often available for attack.
  3. Place your knee in the hole, then dive for the far side leg while using your other leg as a pendulum to sit up and collect the leg.
  4. Once you have control of the far side leg, bring your leg over theirs without ripping. Ensure your knee is out of the way and focus on going over the leg smoothly.
  5. Adjust your ankle lock grip to the correct position. Keep your elbow tight to your ribs, look up to the ceiling, and pull your legs together to finish the sweep.
  6. Remember, placing your knee in the hole is crucial for creating the angle and space needed to control and attack the far side leg effectively.
  7. Use the pendulum motion to gain the necessary leverage and position. Once you isolate the far side leg, you have time to adjust your ankle lock grip as needed.
