About this video

Transitioning from Spider Guard and De La Riva to Single Leg X-Guard allows for a toe hold attack, which is particularly useful for Brown and Black Belts in competition to counter opponents trying to escape sweeps.

  1. Start by weaving your leg under and bridging to bring your opponent over you, maintaining a pin with your foot on their hip.
  2. Keep your other foot in the Spider Guard instead of moving it inside, using it to push your opponent away and extend their leg.
  3. Ensure your foot does not reap by keeping it on the correct side of their body, curling your toes for grip.
  4. When the opponent's foot is off the mat, transition your grip from the Spider Guard to the toe hold.
  5. Lock your feet and push to make your opponent fall, then lock your elbows and keep their toes close to your body, bringing them down to apply the toe hold.
  6. If the opponent tries to escape, follow their movement and transition into a kneebar, using your elbows to adjust your hip on their knee for the correct angle.
  7. For added control, lock your opponent's free knee to prevent movement and secure the submission.

Remember to bridge effectively using the Spider Guard foot and to pinch your knees when applying the toe hold for limited opponent movement. If the opponent rolls, roll with them to maintain the lock and finish with a kneebar.
