About this video
Modified paper cutter from the 50-50 guard:
- Place your forearm on top of your opponent's toes to control their foot.
- Hold the position and prepare to off-balance your opponent to one side.
- Step your heel onto their hip bone, ensuring it's not too high to avoid giving them leverage.
- If your opponent tries to counter, use a kick to free yourself.
- With your heel on their hip, use your forearm to apply pressure on their toes.
- Reach for your hamstring and lock it with your gi fabric for added control. In no-gi, simply hold your hamstring.
- Bring your butt close to their butt and start applying pressure by pushing up with your heel and down with your forearm.
- Ensure the foot is trapped correctly from the little toe to the big toe.
- Press away and turn, turn, turn until you secure the submission.
- If starting from an ankle lock attempt that fails, transition to this modified paper cutter by stepping in and following the steps above.
- Remember to keep the correct angle by looking away and pressing down for the submission.
This technique is effective for surprising an opponent who may not be familiar with it, and it can be set up from a failed ankle lock attempt.
