About this video

Executing the Estima Lock from the 50/50 guard when an opponent attempts a straight ankle lock:

  1. Recognize the opportunity to attack with an Estima Lock when the opponent places their foot around your belly button.
  2. Control the opponent's knee with one hand to prevent them from turning and completing the straight ankle lock.
  3. With your other hand, grab the opponent's toes and push them into your belly button, securing the foot in place.
  4. Wrap the foot with a Rear Naked Choke grip and begin to apply pressure by torquing the foot.
  5. Adjust your core to be tight and solid, making the opponent feel as if they are pressing against concrete.
  6. If the opponent tries to go belly down, follow them to maintain the Estima Lock pressure.
  7. Be mindful of reaping rules and adjust your position accordingly to avoid penalties.
  8. Ensure the opponent's foot is bent to effectively apply the submission; a straightened foot will not yield a tap.
  9. If executed correctly and swiftly, you can submit the opponent before they have a chance to fully apply their straight ankle lock.

For visual reference, the effectiveness of this technique can be seen in the Five Grappling Super League heavyweights match where Tanner Rice applied it on Charles Humphreys.
