About this video
Executing a toe-hold and knee bar combination from the 50/50 guard:
- Start by placing your knee in the hole of the 50/50 guard while keeping your ankle protected to ensure safety.
- Use a pendulum motion with your leg, which will be useful for the upcoming technique.
- For the toe-hold, place your elbow on the mat and your pinky on the opponent's little toe.
- Dive forward, grabbing the toe, and straighten the opponent's leg. It's okay if they stiffen their foot.
- Attempt to throw your leg over and transition to the other side of their body.
- As you move to the other side, the opponent may try to straighten their leg to push you away, but focus on completing the lock.
- Instead of trying to bring the ankle to the butt, which is difficult with a straightened leg, concentrate on locking your elbows to your core for strength.
- Use monkey grips (thumbs over fingers) for a stronger hold on the toe-hold.
- If the opponent tries to roll to escape, follow their movement and roll with them.
- When you stop rolling, you can attempt to bring the toes down towards the butt, but if the leg is stiff, focus on rotating instead.
- Release the ankle lock and transition to the knee bar by pinching your knees together and squeezing hard.
- Lock your elbow down to your ribs, hold your hamstring, and squeeze to finish the knee bar.
- If you need to get closer to your opponent, scoot in towards them before applying the knee bar.
- Follow the opponent's movements if they try to rotate, getting closer each time until you can secure the knee bar.
- Pinch your knees, lock your elbow, and apply the squeeze to finalize the submission.
